These are on-going courses for everyone whatever their degree of experience in art, and I will teach each person at their own individual level.

For the beginner, here is a chance to try your hand at the most supreme painting medium of all, with its individual textures and exquisite colours.  It is the most flexible, traditional, and satisfying medium of all in which to paint.

I can show you the original techniques employed by the old masters, using many thin layers of paint and glazes, to produce fine art paintings of great depth and richness. Both the beginner and the more experienced amateur will acquire sufficient knowledge to make paintings of which they will be proud.

I will bring different ideas to the class for your inspiration and will set specific tasks you can follow if you wish but ultimately subject matter can be your choice.

If you do not already own a set of oil colours and painting materials, a list of what you will need follows, which you may like to buy after the first class… but before the second, once you are sure you feel happy with the course which lies ahead.

Private Tuition

I also give one-to-one tuition at £25 per hour.  Please ring 01638 717337 or

0785 993 1122 to arrange.

Group Tuition for Children

Teaching children of 11 and over to paint a portrait in oils.

I am able to offer a course of eight workshops, once weekly, over the duration of a term. A maximum of 10 students may attend, preferably selected as gifted and talented in art. The school should supply the art materials required and I will supply the model. The sessions will begin with design and composition, and will cover learning how to do a measured drawing, understanding tone and colour, and use of oil paints using the traditional techniques of the old masters.

A private view may be held at the end of the course.

What you will need for Oil Painting Classes

Pencil HB and 2B • Terracotta conte pencil • Putty Rubber • Daler Board or stretched canvas or to keep cost down, MDF cut down and primed • Bristle and sable brushes of your choice. Between sizes 12 – 0 in Bristle and 000 – 2 in Sable.  (You can get sable/nylon mix as a cheaper option) • Oil paints. The basic colours you will need are as follows: Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine, Cerulean blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Light Red, Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Naples Yellow, Terre Verte, Sap Green, Raw Sienna, Titanium White, Zinc White • Palette - You can buy disposable palettes which are much easier as you don’t need to clean them off.  Otherwise a piece of kitchen melamine will do as a cheap alternative to buying a proper one • Glass jar of white spirit • Painting medium - Liquin is the quickest drying, linseed oil/turps mix slower and runnier • Old Rag • Mahl Stick - I will show you one of these in the first session - you can make them up yourself at home from a bamboo cane and a piece of chamois leather • Easel • Retouching Varnish.

Great Art do a very cheap mail order service and can be found on the internet at www.greatart.co.uk and their order line is 0845 601 5772.  Normally they only take a couple of days to deliver and this is definitely the cheapest way to buy art materials.  Otherwise, Tindalls in Newmarket, Ottewill Art in Bury St. Edmunds stock all you will need.
